How Waste Fuel combats Greenhouse Gases
Waste fuels are fuels that derive their raw materials from things like agricultural wastes, used plastics, wood scraps, and animal parts. Since these materials are reused and are saved from burning or decomposing in landfills and dump sites, waste fuels are believed to be more environment-friendly than regular fossil fuel. And for the most part, people support production of waste fuels simply because they reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well.
What exactly are greenhouse gases? Basically, greenhouse gases are gases that allow the sunlight to easily enter the atmosphere. In our atmosphere, there are gases that reflect the sun’s heat, returning it back to space. Greenhouse gases on the other hand, absorb the heat and like a blanket and trap the heat inside our atmosphere. Some greenhouse gases occur naturally so it is normal that they act this way. The problem starts when there is too much of the greenhouse gases. When this happens, the amount of heat absorbed in our atmosphere is larger than the amount of heat that is returned to space throwing us off balance.
Why does the amount of greenhouse gases increase? Greenhouse gases become overly abundant when there are too many industrial activities that produce these gases and there are fewer trees and other organic substances that can absorb them. When there are not enough trees to absorb the gases they are freely released into the atmosphere.
Carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane are the common examples of naturally occurring greenhouse gases. However, there are also greenhouse gases that come from man-made products like aerosol sprays.
There are also other places where we produce greenhouse gases. In America, greenhouse gases are produced when we burn or process fossil fuels for gas and petroleum. Greenhouse gases are also released through our cars’ exhaust fumes. The main source of greenhouse gases is from energy production, especially electricity generation.
How do greenhouse gases affect you? It’s actually quite simple. When there are too many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere more heat is absorbed. This makes the planet warmer. When the planet’s temperature increases, it can lead to melting of the ice caps, which in turn can lead to extreme flooding. This is why the increasing amounts of greenhouses are the main concern for many of our leaders. When greenhouse gases reach alarming levels, there can be flooding the likes of which will cause entire islands to be covered in water. Increased heat in the planet will also change the way storms and hurricanes occur and their frequency.
This is the reason why scientists and environmentalists are pushing for better sources of energy. If we lessen our dependency on coal and if we stop burning fossil fuels we will decrease the greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere. That is why turning trash to waste fuels has become such a viable option for a renewable source of energy.
If we are able to curb our greenhouse gas emissions, we will help keep the earth at a much more stable temperature. Greenhouse gases are an important concern because if we do not act now, we have to expect detrimental effects to our weather and climate systems in the years to come.
